6 - 7.11.09 International debate in Slovenia

The sixth and seventh of November saw the first of the international debates of the year. Mr Loddo and Ms Pragnell took a team of Year 12 and 13's to participate in a very prestigious World Schools debate in Ljutomer in Slovenia. This is the first time that our students have debated under the very different rules and format of this International competition.

We took two teams over comprised of Sara, David and Sinisa ( PBS1) and Dimitrije, Ana and Vladimir (PBS2)

The competition was very stiff...there were 40 teams from across the globe, all very experienced. All teams were required to prepare 4 motions but were not told if they were proposing or opposing until half an hour before the start of the round. In addition to this they were given an hour to prepare impromptu motions with no access to the internet or a library. A very tall order for all the teams.

The style of debating was very different to what PBS has been used to. This was extremely fast paced and aggressive with a brutal disregard for points of information and scathing counterarguments. The judging was also very stringent with scores for individual speakers as well as teams.

Out of over two hundred students, all our speakers were placed within the top 40. Sara achieved an extremely creditable tenth place and was awarded a certificate of merit. PBS1 narrowly missed out on the semi finals being ranked 9th. PBS2 only just missed a top ten position, achieving an 11th place. Superb performances from our students.
