10 - 14.1.2009 Senior School debate trip Maribor, Slovenia

After last-minute packing and hectic midnight phone calls concerning the number of socks to be taken etc., we, the debate team from PBS met on the Nádrazí Holešovice platform, all ready and set to head for Maribor-Slovenia. After the 9 hour train ride which encompassed debating over politics and other highly intellectual matters along with eating gargantuan amounts of home-made sandwiches, we finally arrived in frost-stricken Maribor. Warmly welcomed by our host families and our mates-to-be from Luxembourg and Slovenia, we set off to unpack and then explore Maribor at night with our new friends (yes, quite a romantic sight.) The next morning we awoke with some difficulty heading straight for the local school (unfortunately the trip was not a holiday in this sense) and upon our arrival were grouped into our teams and received the motion: “This house believes that technology can solve world problems” Brainstorming thoroughly and talking passionately, the teams formed some sort of an idea on what they actually want to talk about, and later, as real intellectuals do, went to discuss the matters further into Centre Café, over a cup of coffee with home-made cream and chocolate sprinkles. There we further engaged ourselves in furtively debating the motion inside our teams and praising the local coffee. The next day went in the same spirit as we prepared our speeches, did large amounts of research, spun webs of deduction and logic around the other team and explored local pancake shops. The really eager ones took to some night shopping in the local Europark, exploiting the post-Christmas sales, whilst others continued to absorb the atmosphere of Maribor. The next day there was still time for the routine last minute hysteria over unfinished speeches, timing, memorizing and writing speeches on cards. The daily coffee was however not forgotten even in such a hard time. At 3 o’clock the debate had begun. Although small, the audience seemed engaged by the speeches of both teams and listened attentively. The debate went smoothly, with no vulgarisms or harshness, and was quite a diplomatic experience. At the end of the day, both teams won- one won the vote from the floor, the other from the judges. Relieved, we went to calm our nerves at a wonderful local restaurant and later went on to celebrate- the Luxembourgish, Slovenians and Czechs in unison. Awakening extremely slowly and with much difficulty the following morning, we packed our things and again met on the Maribor platform, this time to say goodbye. After surviving the train journey we reached Prague once more, on one side happy from being home with a completely new range of debating experiences, on the other side sad and leaving behind many great new friends.

16 - 23.06.08 Basketball camp

It was great to see all 23 students turn up on Sunday at the Prague British School keen and ready to play basketball.

The head coach Mr. Bill Eldred from New Zealand was excited about the prospect of taking such keen basketballers for the 40 hour camp. We started with the basics, we worked on balance, stace, and  all important footwork. Then we moved into ball handling skills and drills. We progressed through series of passing, fitness, and footwork activities and at the end of the day the group was split into four even teams so that we could finish up each session with a mini league match.

As the camp moved on we picked the pace up every day. We worked on teamwork skills, screening, and team shooting drills. We also had many competitions throughout the daily sessions, for example shooting competitions with individual prizes. Prizes were also awarded at the end of the clinic for the most improved player and also the best team player. Yong Sung from year seven won the most improved and Dominik from Slavia won the award for the best team player. All involved greatly enjoyed the basketball camp. It was also evident that the skill level and techniques in many areas vastly improved, and the students involved will remember the skills learnt for many years to come.

Many thanks to the head coach Mr. Bill Eldred and also Mr. David Carpenter for their time spent on this event, as well as Mr. Peter Taufer and Mr Jaromir Chlada for assistant coaching in all sessions after school and also to Mrs Lydia Tumova for helping out on the Sunday session. 18.04.08 Senior School Production "Grease"

Playing to two capacity houses on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th April 2008, the Senior School's production of Grease was the must see event of the year. The talented cast amazed the audiences with their polished performances; the musicians were superb in their interpretation of the classic soundtrack; and the outstanding backstage crew ensured that both performances ran flawlessly. By far the most ambitious production the school has ever seen, as well as being the first musical, production values were extremely high and we can't wait to see what will be on offer next year. Well done to EVERYONE involved - you know who you are!

18.04.08 Reconstruction of Kamyk site - Summer 2008

In July 2008 we will begin the reconstruction of the façade of Kamyk site. The first phase, including the whole Primary School and the main Senior school building will be completed by the end of August.

The Prague British School is fully committed to developing our Kamyk site. Since moving to the Kamyk site in 2004, reconstruction work has been carried out in every classroom and almost every interior space used by our students for learning. The new sports field and running track added last September are proving to be of great benefit to our students.

The reconstruction of the façade will help create a learning environment that is suited to the high standard of teaching and learning at PBS. This improved environment will be of direct benefit to our current students and we look forward to starting the new school year in our new, improved school building.

13.03.08 Primary Football - Vlastina vs Kamyk

Mr Hayes writes: The children at Vlastina were very excited about having their own football field so I decided to arrange a friendly 7-a-side football game between the Vlastina and Kamyk football teams. The Kamyk teams arrived at Vlastina at 3.30 pm and were very impressed with the new school, especially the new changing rooms and football field.

The boys played the first game and after 10 minutes both teams had produced good football but no goals. Just before half time, Kamyk's striker Irakli counter-attacked and scored with a very good low shot into the corner. The second half was all Vlastina. They put a lot of pressure on the Kamyk goal and with 5 minutes to go Jakub H scored a very good goal and the game ended 1-1.

The girls stared their game very well and both teams were battling for the ball. In the first 5 minutes Vlastina's striker Ipek produced a great shot which hit the post. Kamyk kept the pressure on and from a long throw in near the corner, the ball bounced through the defence and some how ended up in the Vlastina goal. This produced the only goal of the game to make it a winning start for the Kamyk girls team.

The boys played their final game and this time Vlastina had more possession and were pressuring the Kamyk defence throughout the game. Shots from Jacub H, Ondrej H, Joe O and Ethan D continued to keep Kamyk's goalkeeper David K very busy but both teams could not score the winning goal and the game ended 0-0.

The girls played their final game but with the strong wind blowing across the field the girls found it difficult to pass the ball around. Vlastina had chances to score but Kamyk's goalkeeper Klara J denied Vlastina again. A long shot from Kamyk's Emilie J produced the only goal of the game with Kamyk winning 1-0. Dispite the cold wind and the few drops of rain I was really pleased to see all the children, staff and parents watching and encouraging everyone involved.

I would like to thank Mr McGuinness, Mr Hanlon, Miss Power, Mr Romans and Miss Edwards for taking their time out to train and help the teams at both sites. We will have the return match at the Kamyk site in April and I am sure both teams will try hard and display the same excellent attitude they showed at Vlastina.

10.03.08 Jump Rope for Heart, Jump Off

The „Jump Rope for Heart, Jump Off“, turned out to be a great success. The entire Kamyk staff and student body assembled on the athletics track to watch the ISP skipping club demonstration. We all marveled at what eighteen six to eight year old students could do with skipping ropes large and small. The demonstration was for half an hour and even all of the staff had to perform a trick in front of everyone.

Then it was time for the school “jump off”, each student had to skip for one minute each before they passed the rope on to their class mate. The weather was superb and this aided to an enthusiasm the school had for skipping. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves with exercise in the sun.

We are currently collecting all money in from students to send to the British Heart Foundation.

25.02.08 - Well done Barbora!

From Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th February Barbora from Year 10 visited Brno where a large indoor show-jumping competition took place. This competition was called CSI-W** and 14 different nations came to compete. Barbora had her 2 best horses there, “Careful” and “Kohen”. Barbora and her trainer decided to go with both of them on the A-tour.

Each day there was one competition of this particular tour (Friday- 115-120cm, Saturday- 120cm and on Sunday- 2 phases 120cm). “Kohen” which is the younger of the two horses she had in each competition made one mistake, which meant 4 penalty points. “Careful” and Barbora completed all of the courses clearly and quickly, which meant that on Friday she ended up in 3rd place, on Saturday in 2nd place and on Sunday she was first, which was a great success. Both of them jumped really well and she enjoyed it a lot, well done Barbora!

21.02.08 - Debate Team visits Gibraltar

21st February saw eight students accompanied by Mr A Loddo depart for the far flung reaches of Gibraltar to compete against Bayside Boys Comprehensive School in the first Prague versus Gibraltar debate. Our team, comprising of  Katya K,  Valentyn B and Martina J were supporting the motion  “Should Smoking Be Banned Outright?”. The Chairperson and the timekeeper were Lizzie B and Katya L respectively. The PBS students performed exceptionally well against a superbly prepared team in front of a very openly partisan audience and won most convincingly, Katya K earning the title of best speaker.

A very busy schedule allowed little time for relaxation as the following morning our students were again involved in a debate, but this time against each other in a demonstration debate at Westside Girls Comprehensive School. The motion “Hollywood Has A Negative Effect On Society” was proposed by Eliska H, Sara P and Martina J. The opposition was comprised of Katya L, Dimitrije S and Valentyn B. The motion was carried with Eliska being awarded best speaker. Lizzie B chaired for the second time and Katya K was the timekeeper.

The trip was very successful and what has hopefully been achieved is a strong link between our school and Gibraltar with educational, sporting and cultural exchanges continuing in the future.

11.02.08 - Vlastina site is open!

We all look forward to this exciting new chapter in the history of the Prague British School.

12 - 13.10.07 - COBIS Conference at PBS

On Saturday 13th of October the Executive Committe of  COBIS met at The Prague British School. The Executive meets usually in London, three times a year, to discuss and ensure the maintenance of quality and standards in British schools abraod. Cobis is the quality assurance that your child’s school has achieved the very highest standards in education and care.

COBIS is a Membership Association of British Schools of quality and is affiliated to the Independent Schools Council (ISC) of the United Kingdom. By virtue of this and its agreement with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), it is able to accredit British Schools abroad, anywhere in the world. The current mission statement of COBIS includes the following as its main objectives:-

  • Quality assurance in member schools.
  • Representation with the British Government, with educational bodies and with the corporate sector.
  • A forum for discussion through conferences, seminars and continuing professional development..
  • A network of support through contacts, consultancies, information and marketing.

A fundamental aim of COBIS is to support its members and represent their interests in Britain and overseas, particularly with Government, education authorities and educational associations in order to advance the interests of British schools outside the UK. Unlike many other countries, the British Government does not support schools abroad. British schools outside Britain therefore depend entirely on independent, non governmental organisations.

COBIS was founded in 1981 as COBISEC (Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities) and is a Charitable Association registered in The Hague. The Association is managed by an elected Executive Committee which includes both Heads and Governors (Board Members). In 2000 the Association became affiliated to ISC, and adopted the ISI inspection scheme as the route to full Accredited membership for its European members.

The Annual General Meeting in May 2007 unanimously decided to shorten the name to reflect the increasingly international composition of the membership, and signed an agreement with ISI to enable British schools abroad, anywhere in the world to be inspected and accredited.
