THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE

MARCH 2009

The performance of the play Adrian Mole aged 13 and ¾ was something new. The producer, Mrs.Loddo decided to go for drama this year – drama on stage that is. The piece of Adrian Mole was different to anything we ever did before. A bittersweet comedy about a troubled adolescent with parents more childish than himself, a slimy insurance manager and his man-of-a-wife for neighbours, a John Travolta-like spoiled brat of a friend and Pandora – his first love. All these diverse characters are mixed in the context of the golden 80s in Britain, with political satire and references to Jim Reeves being an inseparable part of the script. The performance was the kind where each character is unique – whether it’s the fragile Adrian, emancipated Pauline, the totalitarian school director Scruton or the 83-year old communist pensioner Bert. Mrs. Loddo tried to type-cast all of the characters, and I daresay that it resulted in an excellent performance studded not only with fantastic individual performances but also showing great teamwork on stage, even between characters which were completely different from each other. (Hopefully, the actors didn’t take the issue with type-casting personally.) What first seemed a small performance turned into a bombastic school event. The success was unanticipated. Spreading over two evening performances, both completely packed, the play of Adrian Mole turned out to be a true dramatic achievement – more so that it was the first major production put up in the new PBS Performing Arts Centre. Actors representing all years from 7-12 put together an emotional play, hilariously funny on the surface yet very bittersweet in reality. If you missed it and would like to see it/saw it but would like to watch it over again during long winter evenings/are one of the actors who loves to watch himself, please don’t hesitate to buy the school DVD of Adrian Mole, which is coming soon! If you just want a sneak-peak for the moment, make sure you have a look at the photos from the play on this site. (Photos from the after-party held in the music room are not included for tactical reasons.)
