Key Stage 3  Introduction

Years 7–9 go to make up Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum. During this time, all students follow a course involving a wide range of subjects designed to stretch and challenge every individual, providing everyone with the opportunity to discover and examine their own particular interests and talents.
A wide range of teaching styles are used to meet the differing demands of each subject - an emphasis is put on problem-solving, team work and the development of independent study.

Students in Years 7 & 8 study two languages: French and German. The courses are designed to develop an interest and enthusiasm for using other languages and to provide a basic grounding for further study of one or more languages at a higher level later in school. Special provision is made for mother tongue speakers of these languages.

During Year 9, students study either French or German in depth, and the three individual sciences (Physics, Chemistry & Biology). Towards the latter half of Year 9, students select the subjects for their IGCSE examination courses for the next two years – this selection process is based upon a wide range of guidance and advice and is undertaken in close consultation with parents and staff.

These subjects will have been selected by the students in close consultation with parents and staff. Students are encouraged to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum by building upon a core of the following subjects:

  1. English Language
  2. English Literature
  3. Mathematics
  4. Combined Science
  5. Geography or History
  6. Information Communication Technology
  7. Modern Foreign Language
  8. Optional – Business Studies, Drama, Art

Sixth Form (IB)

Years 12 and 13, traditionally referred to as the 'Sixth Form', are the final years of schooling during which students follow a course of study which will allow them entrance to universities the world over.

Those students wishing to undertake these two additional years of study, are required to demonstrate an appropriate level of academic ability as well as a positive attitude towards the commitment this level of education requires. PBS students, and those coming from other British schools, need to have achieved well in their IGCSEs to continue – other students coming from different educational systems will be assessed as part of the admissions process. School reports, examinations results and all help to provide staff with an overview of a student's ability.

The Programme of Study is The International Baccalaureate, known as the IB.  This increasingly popular two year course equips students with a wide ranging educational experience and also allows students to develop as independent learners and critical thinkers.
Students study:

  • World Literature
  • Modern Foreign Language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanity
  • The Arts

In addition students complete Creativity Action and Service and undertake an Extended Essay on a topic of their choosing.
