Czech for Czechs, known as "the Czech programme" at PBS, is an educational programme in the Czech language for Czech nationals or children of other nationalities who can speak Czech fluently. It covers the nine years of compulsory school education (PBS Years 2 – 10) plus one preparatory year at the age of 5 (PBS Year 1). This programme is based on the official requirements set by the Czech Ministry of Education. The programme covers these subjects: Czech Literacy – Grammar, Reading and Handwriting, Natural Sciences, Czech History and Geography. For more information refer to the Czech version below.
Introduction
The Czech Programme at PBS includes instruction of selected subjects in Czech for pupils with Czech nationality/native speakers as a part of their compulsory education. The programme is based on the national curriculum for the primary education in the Czech Republic and is governed by Act No. 561/2004 Coll., Section 38 – Satisfying Compulsory School Education in a Special Manner.

Who are the target group?
The Czech Programme targets especially children with Czech nationality who are obliged to complete a 9-year school education at a school in the Czech Republic. The programme may also be attended by children of other nationalities who speak Czech fluently and are interested in completing education at a Czech primary school.
Which subjects are taught?
The main content of the education under the programme is Czech language – grammar, writing and reading (literature later on), furthermore our world (originally the basics of humanities and natural sciences), and national history and geography – selected chapters from geography and history related to the Czech Republic.
Organisation of Teaching
Primary School (Class 1 – Class 5; Years 2 – 6)
Since 1 September 2010, the pupil capacity at the Czech British Primary School (CBZS) has been successfully increased. Thanks to this change, PBS may offer all its pupils attending Years 2 – 6 and enrolled in the Czech Programme registration at the Czech British Primary School as their regular school. Here, they complete their compulsory school education pursuant to Section 38.
The advantage of this step not only for parents but especially for children lies in the simplification of the final tests and especially the associated stress being decreased to the minimum level. Children are regular pupils of the classes at the CBZS in Kamýk and Vlastina, where they are taught by their class teachers of the CBZS (wherever it is possible) and tested by them as well. Examinations take place on a regular basis and during Czech language lessons. The examinations also include oral and written tests, e.g. dictation and grammar exercises, but also quarterly, biannual and final tests. In this way, a sufficient number of marks may be secured on the basis of which a teacher evaluates pupils at the end of the school year. A final oral examination is required only when a mark is borderline.
Children are assessed in the following subjects: Czech language (including reading and writing in the lower classes), the basics of humanities and natural sciences and national history and geography (now referred to as "man and his world"). Assessment is according to the classification scale 1 – 5. A report is issued by CBZS.
Transfer to the Senior School
Because the CBZS is a primary school providing the 1st level of education and its attendance is completed in the Class 5 (Year 6), pupils transferring to Year 7 (Senior School) are re-registered, and our partner school – the Filosofská Senior School – becomes their regular school (of course, a pupil may also be registered at another Czech senior school). Here, pupils continue completing their compulsory school education until the required level, i.e. the Class 9 (Year 10).
Students are evaluated in the following subjects: Czech language (including literature), and the history and geography of the Czech Republic. Assessment is according to a classification scale ranging from excellent to fail. A report is issued by the Filosofská Senior School.
In case you decide to transfer to another Czech senior school after having completed Year 6, the corresponding study programme application will be confirmed for you.
Lesson Schedule in the Czech Programme
Education under the Czech Programme is performed in the Primary School three times a week for 45 minutes; each lesson runs from 8:15 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. Pupils are assigned a classroom where lessons take place during the whole academic year. Their teachers are the teachers/class teachers of corresponding classes at CBZS who are responsible for the quality of education as well as for the level of achieved knowledge.
Education under the Czech Programme at the PBS Senior School is performed three times a week in the Class 6 (Year 7) and twice a week in the Classes 7 to 9 (Year 8 – Year 10), always for 45 minutes. Students attending Year 7 and Year 8 may choose between the morning and noon lessons; students attending Sixth Form have only noon lessons available to them. Teachers are the staff qualified for the senior school, specialising in Czech language and history. They are also responsible for the quality of education, schoolwork covered and knowledge obtained. Their main objective is to prepare students for their final written and oral exams. Written tests are taken twice a year, midway through the year and at the end of the school year, at our school. Final oral exams are taken once a year, in June, also at our school, this time in presence of teachers from the Filosofská Senior School.
How are pupils assessed?
At the end of every year, students will receive a standard Czech report, providing their assessment with respect to the subjects taught in the academic year in question under the Czech Programme. Assessment shall be executed according to the following classification scales:
How is the registration process carried out and what is required for it?
The lessons are attended both by pupils registered at our school – the Czech British School – and the partner school – the Jitřní Primary School, Prague 4 – and by pupils registered at other primary schools.
