Improving children’s learning is at the heart of The Prague British School. It is therefore essential that the curriculum we offer also focuses on this and allows children to enjoy their learning.
English and mathematics are taught through the National Curriculum for England following the Framework for Literacy and Numeracy.
For all other subjects, we follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), where students learn through a thematic approach, allowing them to make learning connections between the various subjects.
The IPC is a highly regarded curriculum throughout the world and approved by HMI (Her Majesty’s Inspectorate) and incorporates all the recommendations of the 2010 Rose Report which focused on how to improve Primary Education. The IPC also incorporates the latest brain research ensuring the curriculum enables each child to learn to the best of their ability.
For more information, go to the International Primary Curriculum website
The learning goals of the IPC are split into four age bands covering the Foundation Stage and primary years. Within each age band there are three strands of Learning Goals: Subject goals, Personal Goals and International Goals. Subjects include history, geography, science, art, design, IT, PE, music and society. Through the units of work, links are made to the host and home countries.
Children also have some specialist lessons: specialist PE and music lessons are provided for all our students from Reception to Year 6, while French is provided to students from Year 3 to Year 6.
As we are in the Czech Republic, we value the language and culture of our host country. All children from Year 1 - 6 therefore have Czech lessons each week.
Your child's teacher will inform you about which English, mathematics and IPC units of work the class will study during the year through an informative, regular curriculum letter. Parents will have many opportunities to be involved with the work their children are doing.
