The Velvet Scholarship

The Prague British School introduced the Velvet Scholarship in 2009/10. All current PBS students are automatically candidates for this award which is made annually to the outstanding Year 13 graduate.

The Velvet Scholarship will support the costs of an undergraduate programme at a university in the Czech Republic or overseas. A maximum of 90 000 CZK/year will be awarded for a period of three years of study.

The award winner is chosen by the senior school teaching staff and the recipient is announced at the annual summer ball.

Aims

  • To recognise and reward outstanding all round achievement
  • To promote a healthy sense of competition amongst our senior school students
  • To encourage PBS graduates to maintain a link with PBS for life

Criteria and conditions

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate

  • A proven academic track record based on reports, examination results, teacher recommendation.
  • Evidence of a contribution to the school community for example in sports, drama, debates or clubs.
  • Assistance at school events and a demonstration of support of the school ethos.

Subsequent to receiving the award the successful candidate will

  • Take up a place at a university subsequent to graduating from PBS. In the event of a “gap year” the award can be held in abeyance for one academic year. If the student does not then take up a university place the scholarship will be deemed to have lapsed.
  • Provide PBS with an annual report from their University showing satisfactory progress at university during the year.
  • Make a commitment to maintain strong links with the school subsequent to graduating from PBS. Including, for example attendance at school events and giving lectures to existing PBS students.
