Dear Vlastina Friends

Coffee Morning – a big thank you to all the Dutch and Belgium parents who hosted a wonderful, tasty and candlelit coffee morning yesterday.  It was also great to see the room full of parents !

Christmas day is only 44 days away and to help with the preparations there are several opportunities to start your Christmas shopping over the next few weeks.  Just keep reading for more ideas…

One opportunity to start or finish your Christmas shopping is at the PBS Vlastina Christmas Market on Thursday 15 December.  Vlastina Friends will have a stall at the market selling unwanted toys, DVDs and books donated by Vlastina parents.  The money raised at the stall will go to the PBS charity, Acorus.  This is a great time to have a clear out and make space for the new toys the children will receive at Christmas so bring in the items you no longer wish to have, it could make another child very happy !!

On Thursday 15 December, Vlastina Friends will need volunteers to help sort the items they have received, put prices on the items, help set up the stall and help sell the items at the market.  If you would like to help please email sandrainprague@gmail.com more details will be sent out nearer the time.

VLASTINA FRIENDS

---

2nd September 2011

Dear Vlastina Friends - Welcome Back!!!

Another school year started this week – we will miss those friends who have moved away, but it is great to see lots of familiar faces again after the summer holidays, and of course, welcome new parents and their children.

For the Vlastina Friends, this will be the second year we will plan all sorts of activities and events for the children, the school and the parents.  For new parents a mission statement of the Friends is included below to explain a little bit more what “Vlastina Friends” is all about.

COFFEE MORNINGS

Vlastina Friends kicked off the new year with a coffee morning yesterday.  It was great to see so many people and hear stories from the summer holidays.  From October onwards there will be a ‘Country’ coffee morning each month.  The dates will be published in the newsletter.  That means that every month a different country will host the coffee morning and bring cakes or snacks that are common in their own country.  A sign up sheet will be soon put onto the Friends noticeboard in the parents room.

20TH ANNIVERSARY PBS WELCOME PICNIC

On Saturday 10th September, the 20th Anniversary PBS Welcome Picnic at Vlastina will take place.  We hope lots of parents will attend from both Vlastina and Kamyk locations.  This day cannot be organised without the help from staff and parents.  There will be different activities, and therefore, we will be asking parents to sign up to help out.  There will be a sign up sheet on the Friends noticeboard in the parents room by next week.  It would be great if you could spare half an hour of your time during the Welcome Picnic to help make this the best day ever.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Nicole Blasman, Miss Sharp or Mr Bagust.

VLASTINA FRIENDS MEETING

On Thursday 15th September, Vlastina Friends will have their first Friends meeting at 8:30am in the parents room. Hopefully, lots of enthusiastic parents will attend.  The Vlastina staff are great and always excited to help organise lots of events.

We are also looking for parents to join the Vlastina Friends Board.  Positions to be filled are a new treasurer, a new secretary and a new chair.  It is a lot of fun to be on the board and really rewarding.  It really does not take up a lot of your time so if you are interested please come to our meeting or let me know.  Here is some information on what each position may include:

Chairperson - Chair monthly meetings.  Together with the rest of the board members, organise various activities within the school in co-operation with Mr Bagust and the staff.  Organise activities for parents to attend.  During the year 2011-2012 attend the PBS Anniversary meetings.  Together with the secretary, prepare a page for the weekly newsletter.  This role is a lot of fun to do and it can take up as much or as little time as you want it to be.

Secretary - Take minutes at the monthly meetings.  Together with the chairperson, prepare a page for the weekly newsletter.  Create posters/flyers when required for events.  Together with the rest of the board members, co-ordinate various activities and events within the school.

Treasurer - Take care of all the finances within the Vlastina Friends.  Together with the rest of the board, co-ordinate various activities within the school.

Members - besides the board members we are always looking for parents that would like to be actively involved with activities and events organised throughout the year.  So if you have some spare time please come and join us!!!

VLASTINA FRIENDS

In October 2010 we founded the PBS Vlastina events organisation: “Vlastina Friends”.  All parents and teachers/staff automatically belong to the ‘Vlastina Friends’.

Mission Statement

The main purpose of “Vlastina Friends” is to support the community of the school, inside the classroom as well as outside the classroom, through events and activities.  As we are in an International school environment, the events will try and reflect this fact to its best abilities and seek to function as an integrator of the nationalities at PBS Vlastina.

Funding the events and support of charities

Vlastina Friends is completely non profit.  Money earned will be retained to fund further activities and to support chosen charities or charitable causes.

The school community is asked to suggest possible relevant charities and an election will take place (on the Vlastina Friends general meeting or via email/letter vote).

One charity will be elected for a period of 3 school years (the next vote will take place in autumn 2013).  In 2010 the charity elected was Acorus.

Parents will be asked to make contributions to fund the different activities.  The Vlastina Friends board will seek to keep contributions to a minimum so no one will feel excluded on this basis.

The events and how to help run them

To ensure the success of “the Vlastina Friends” and the whole point of the organisation, which is to create a community around our childrens’ school, that more than just a small, enthusiastic group are supportive and offer their help at events as they come up.  It is essential to make clear, that every helping hand is appreciated and that a tremendous amount of work into the events is not expected.  On the other hand, the more parents who take part, the better the events will ultimately be.  We will think of various ways to engage parents (regular monthly meetings is first, sign up sheets, newsletters and ‘word of mouth’).

Meeting Schedule

One monthly meeting will take place for all interested.

Sub committees for the various events will meet as appropriate.

Example of Events that Vlastina Friends coordinates:

-              bake sales

-              children’s Christmas fair

-              disco

-              family fun day

-              country orientated coffee mornings

-              monthly recipe club

-              mums night out

-              mums lunch out

-              refreshments at events

WALK AND TALK CLUB

If you like walking and talking then come and join us.  We meet every Friday at 0840 in the Reception area and walk around the beautiful nearby Divoka Sarka for about 1 to 1.5 hours.  It is a great way to make new friends, swap tips, ask questions about Prague and much more…
